May 1st - 3rd 2009 - Weekend Festivities

Postby Raquel » Sat May 09, 2009 2:50 pm

So much fun over the weekend! The highlight? Sitting in shakedown wasting time, drinking beer, eating Jerry Rolls, bumping into friends you haven't seen in years and building up a level of dirt that pretty much insulates you from all that ails! ;-)
Until "you know who" came round and insisted all fun-having will be stopped at once! They just won't let you be...

LOVE!

Too funny, Annie... While walking down Shakedown, I was telling Butchy I thought Shakedown was the same now as it was back in the day, except that now there was a high sketch factor. He reminded me that nothing had changed really, there was always that high sketch factor, that's part of the charm! We were laughing how in the 80's people were saying, "yeah, this scene is definitely getting shadier"... Same thing in the 90's, "complaints of how shady Phish people and "Post-Touch" people were ruining everything". Here we are, almost 2010 and I've read at least three threads/blogs warning of the deterioration of the scene :???:

Raquel ..... Right On !!! Exactly ! Must be human nature to do this. I just accept our scene as just that: Our Scene. We can effect a change, or not ! It is what it is, with scammers and the Heat. That's part of it. Yep, the cops ran us out at the end on Sat nite > it was Bonnie's first real Shakedown, and I had been very excited to walk her out in the evening aisles of carnivale and bliss. The men in blue took some of that from us, but we had our fill, and that was all part of the adventure. So I got to point it out to her that it wasn't even a cloudy day. We just smiled and frolicked away !!! And because of that experience, we ran into a grate drum circle that contained our very own Dashiki Joe !!! What a treat !!! It was a beautiful reunion for us that might not have happened if the cops didn't corral us into moving ! Thanx for pix, Raquel !!! Love each and every one ! ezezezezez

Right?? The name suits it well. It's a shakedown. OR can be. The shady shady element has always been a part of our scene. I always get so frustrated with people's romantic notions of it being all a peaceful loving supportive community. Is is that in great part for certain!! But there's the yin and the yang!! It takes all kinds to make our rolling circus, our favorite freak show.

It's like any society or community. It is not Utopia, but it is OURS ! It beats the hell out of any other scene I can think of. I do like to romanticize this, because that is my choice and my daydream. I've witnessed a lotta shit in the Lot, and choose to emphasize the good - the good far outweighs the bad here ! Jerry Bless the Grateful Dead ! ez

Ahhhh!! You hopeless romantic!! Where's the cynicism? The harsh edge? The sharp bite of cold hard reality?? Have you no pessimism? No dark caverns of hatred and despair? What's WRONG with you??

I always romanticized the scene of people who travelled with the dead, and always wished in the back of my mind that I could be a part of it. Also, I've always felt that if either of my kids were to set out on the road and get off the moving sidewalk of life in normal society, they could do a lot worse than to follow a jam band and be a part of the hippy scene, and live in the parking lots.

According to the Haight-Ashbery folks, the Hippie movement died in October, 1967.

I guess "Shakedown" has been full of posers and sketchers for over 40 years!

That was a fantastic little read ! Thanx Anders !!! I've always wished I'd been born 10 yrs earlier, and had made that trek to SF to participate in the Summer of Love > to help and make it a viable community, not just to take from the scene. ez
