I have a hard time believing that any owner of an establishment such as Brownies would change any ingredient in their thursday nite booking that would possibly cause them to lose money.
I don't know what the financial arrangement is between the band and the bar (I have typically seen the cover go to the band & the bar 100% to the establishment), but in the 2 times I've been to SS on thursdays, it was packed with over 150 at each gig. And that did not leave too much room for many more people either. So, from a dollars and cents perspective, you have 150 paying customers on a regular basis, who probably have an average of 3 drinks at $5 apiece. So there is ample cash flow to sustain the place. Even a top notch cover for another music genre would have a difficult time rallying an average of 120 people on a given thursday for the long haul. If the establishment wants to guarantee profitability, there are other ways to achieve that, but killing the "Goose that lays the Golden Egg" is not a prudent way to proceed here.
It would be irresponsible of a Bar to push more drinks on the attendees, most of us have a nice drive after the show and stop any alcohol by the end of set one.
One option that might work is to start earlier (8:30), have a $10 cover (since the band would play longer). This would allow an extra drink or 2 per person and still allow enough time to sober up for the drive home.
But in the end, it is an equation that needs to result in a profit for the band and the establishment. In the end, I think that Brownies would be hard-pressed to find an act that could provide a similar cash flow to the Brownies Management than Splintered Sunlight has for the past years. Let's hope they "See the Light", but if not, there are plenty of places that would gladly welcome the band, the fans and the profit that would come from having a regular gig of this nature.
