Thoughts on the New Europe 72 Box Set Compilation

Postby DeadHdMike57 » Wed Feb 02, 2011 11:58 am

Hey now!

I'm sure many of you are aware of the new mega-box set that the Dead.net folks are releasing this fall (September). They are putting together a set of all 22 shows played in Europe (0ver 60 CDs!) in a real cool foot-locker type packaging. Lots of extras and stuff (tickets, stickers, tour books, etc). They are only releasing 7200 of the complete sets. They sold out all the sets in 4 days and will now release sets containing only the CDs. The price of $450 at first looked prohibitive, but when you consider you pay $25 for 3 CDs for a furthur show today, this works out to just over $20 a show for a great show in the Dead's hayday! To me that is a bargain.
On the Dead site there has been a lot of heated discussion on the set, the cost and how many people got shut out from getting one due to the dead's website glitches. Also, people are even selling them on Ebay for up to, get this, $1500! Perhaps the dead.net crew will follow up and cancel any order to people who have a traceable email address.
When I first heard of this, initially I was tepid to the idea of purchasing the set. But after a day, I realized that in my "golden years", I would love to kick back and catch Tour from Europe. So, I was one of the "fortunate 7200" who was able to preorder this set....and am counting down the days until September when my "toy" arrives.
I checked Deadbase and each show is about 25-30 songs long (with one short show done). I initially was a fan of the 77 era, but the shows in this timeperiod have a different flow, but are quite intense. No long jams or Drums > Space, but lots of unpredictable set lists!
Anythoughts or comments?

just placed my order (deadline was midnight tonight). Interestingly, they offered the opportunity to order 2, although that may not have gotten through the next steps, it for sure made that offer. Can't wait for this - I graduated high school in '72 and this was a special time in my life as a deadhead!

I just got my box set the other day! Mine wasnt numbered, so I was in the 3001 to 7200 club. I have listened to a few shows, but one sticks out. One show, or more approprietly a rehearsal at a German Club, was very interesting. I think it was 4/19/72, only one set of 10 songs. They did Playing in the Band as the 3rd song and for some reason, repeated it 4 songs later...both versions were over 10 mins! And the 2nd time, they even flubbed the beginning and started over!

The overall presentation is excellent! All 22 shows are in sleeves that fit into a footlocker that has angled slots so each show has a home! Stickers on the outside for each citty that was played in, along with a Europe 72 sticker provide nice look to the case! Also provided are 2 nice books; one a hardcover that goes into detail about the europe 72 tour details. Tons of great color photos! The other book is titled "Book of the Dead" and has a bit more overall history of the band and how each member joined on!
Also, each Show has a unique design on the CD sleeve for that show that in someway merges the theme of that venue with the Dead lore (big ben, a german beer stein, etc) which is a real nice touch!
My next task is to upload all 73 discs to ITUNES and then create playlists for my ipod from them!

Glad I opted to join on and get a set!

Good deal Mike. I've been reading a lot of good stuff about how good these shows sound. Guess we won't see you for a long time now.....
